Local sports briefs Playoff games to be made up today Game 3 of the Flowery Branch/Stephens County second round playoff series was postponed due to rain. The game was rescheduled for 5:30 today at the Hog Mountain Sports Complex. 1330-AM will broadcast Game 3 beginning at 5:20 p.m.. The game will be simulcast online at www.glory1330.com. Jefferson’s Game 3 against Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy was also postponed and will be made up at 2 p.m. today in Jefferson. Darnell advances in amateur tourney |

College baseball: Piedmont reaches NCAA tourney The Piedmont College baseball team will play Lynchburg College in the first round of the South Regional Baseball Championship of the NCAA Division-III Baseball Championship at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Daniel Park in Danville, Va. The game marks the first NCAA baseball playoff appearance for the third-seeded Lions and seventh among all Piedmont sports teams. The South Regional Baseball Championship is one of eight first-round sites in the championship. Wood aces No. 8 hole at Royal Lakes Local golfer Ed Wood shot a hole-in-one Tuesday on hole No. 8 at Royal Lakes Golf Course. Wood earned the shot from 150 yards using a No. 4 hybrid club. Malcom Colbert, Kim Gabrels and Neil Canfield witnessed the shot. In other local golf action, the Wednesday Dogfight group played Tuesday at Chicopee Woods Golf Course. The team of Jerry Horton, Don Gardner, Ron Bowyer and Gayle Gibson finished first with plus-22. Second place went to the team of Mark Black, Steve Ballard, Neil Tolbert and Ron Melin with plus-17. Gainesville grad Owings a big hit in big leagues PHOENIX — Arizona manager Bob Melvin seeks out pitcher Micah Owings on the days he isn't starting. "We have a little running joke," Melvin said. "Before every game, I ask him if he has his spikes on. He has his spikes on in the first inning of every game." Many pitchers wear comfortable running shoes in between starts. Owings, a Gainesville High graduate, isn't a typical pitcher. He's batting .417 (10-for-24), and Owings knows that on any given night Melvin could summon him with the game in the balance, so he's always got his spikes ...

College soccer: Brenau adds new coach Brenau University soccer coach Mike Lochstampfor has announced the hiring of Ilisha Hall as an assistant coach. A native of Saskatchewan, Canada, Hall is a 2006 graduate of Northwest Oklahoma State University where she was the soccer team captain and an All-Conference selection. Hall also had coaching stints with the Austria FC soccer club and at Sheldon-Williams High School in Canada. |

Lumpkin County graduate named top athlete at Georgia Southern Georgia Southern senior David Richardson, from Dahlonega, was named the athletic department’s Male Athlete of Year at the Georgia Southern Student-Athlete awards banquet Monday in Statesboro. Richardson, a 2004 Lumpkin County High graduate, is batting .382 this season and currently has a 14-game hitting streak for the Eagles (28-20). He added his latest game to the streak with a hit against Mercer on Monday as part of a 6-4 loss. One of his season highlights includes hitting for the cycle in a 15-9 win against College of Charleston on March 28. |

College soccer: Golden Tigers add another recruit Brenau University added another player to its fall roster with the signing of high school standout Tori Futtrell on Thursday. Futtrell was the team captain and MVP for Jenkins High in Savannah and holds the school record 34 goals in a season. She was also named to the Region 3-AAAAA team. Along with soccer, Futtrell was also MVP of her school softball team, member of the National Honor Society and Key Club and was dual enrolled at Armstrong Atlantic State University where she made the dean’s list. |

Local golf: Cronmiller records her first hole-in-one Local golfer Sue Cronmiller shot a hole-in-one on Sunday, April 27 at Chattahoochee Golf Course. Cronmiller shot the hole-in-one on hole No. 17 from 110 yards using six iron. Eric Cronmiller witnessed the shot. It is her first hole-in-one. |
